10.27.2026 Community Participation as a Medical Necessity: An Introduction to Concepts & Strategies Webinar

What helps people stay connected, engaged, and well? Community participation—taking part in meaningful activities such as work, school, volunteering, faith communities, leisure, and friendships—can play a powerful role in health and well-being. In this webinar, presented on October 27, 2026, Dr. Mark Salzer explored the evidence behind the importance of community participation, including its benefits for people living with significant mental health challenges and those at risk for developing mental health concerns. He highlighted issues especially relevant to older adults, including their individual interests, preferences, and the unique factors that can shape their opportunities to participate in meaningful activities. Attendees also learned practical strategies for identifying the activities and roles that matter most to older adults and for developing approaches that support greater participation in those areas.
